Evercore ISI Q1 2026 P&C Insurance Market Analysis

Investment research company Evercore ISI has released an analysis of the property and casualty (P&C) insurance market for the first quarter of 2026, highlighting challenges in the commercial, personal, and reinsurance sectors. The report underscores softening pricing conditions and technology-driven changes as critical factors affecting sector valuations. Notably, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous vehicles are impacting the operations of brokers and auto insurers.

Despite recent economic shifts, Evercore ISI notes that stocks in the auto and broker segments have not retained their traditional defensive appeal. Conversely, commercial and reinsurance lines have outperformed other financial sectors and the S&P 500 this year. The prolonged soft market cycle is expected to influence commercial lines, with pricing pressures on larger accounts likely affecting smaller and mid-sized ones. Insurers like Hartford and Travelers might be notably impacted by these trends.

Evercore ISI forecasts that first-quarter revenue may fall short for several insurers, including Hartford, Travelers, White Mountains, and American International Group. This shortfall is partially attributed to these companies taking a conservative approach to underwriting volumes to safeguard pricing. The second quarter is anticipated to offer clearer insights into property pricing trends, presenting more demanding year-over-year comparisons.

The report suggests that while casualty pricing might offer support, industry returns could prompt intensified competition. Inflationary factors, including social inflation, may prevent a severe market downturn but potentially shorten the period of softer conditions while maintaining acceptable returns. In personal lines, a disconnect is expected between policy volume and premium growth, with companies like Progressive and Allstate maintaining stable policy counts but potentially falling short in overall premium growth.

Evercore ISI remains prudent despite attractive valuations, as margin pressures might surface later in the year. Large insurers with significant scale, such as Progressive, Allstate, State Farm, and GEICO, are anticipated to increase market concentration, potentially limiting growth for smaller entities. Broker performance is expected to remain steady, supported by stronger nominal GDP growth, with mergers and acquisitions contributing significantly to growth for firms like Aon and Marsh.

A significant concern for brokers revolves around managing investor expectations regarding AI's impact, particularly in personal lines and smaller commercial accounts. Companies are emphasizing their role in risk management and data services to effectively address these concerns, with Arthur J. Gallagher highlighted as a positive example in managing AI exposure.

In the reinsurance sector, Evercore ISI forecasts a decline in pricing during April renewals, particularly in catastrophe-prone areas like Florida. However, current valuations remain comparable to past soft market conditions, with strong returns. Despite expectations of rate cuts, major catastrophe pricing indices suggest that U.S. pricing might remain elevated. Capital management activities, such as share buybacks, are expected to continue alongside softer top-line performance, with geopolitical tensions potentially resulting in manageable insured losses between $30 million and $50 million.
