Advocacy Efforts by Osteopathic Medical Students at DO Day on the Hill
Physicians and osteopathic medical students recently gathered in Washington, D.C., engaging lawmakers on essential healthcare legislation. This event, the American Osteopathic Association's DO Day on the Hill, featured significant involvement from Midwestern University's Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM) students and faculty.
CCOM representatives advocated for three primary legislative initiatives with Congress members. Key issues included enhancing Medicare’s physician payment system, expanding residency slots through graduate medical education, and reforming step therapy to improve patient treatment access. The participation emphasized the strong collective voice of the osteopathic community in addressing regulatory compliance requirements and improving healthcare delivery systems.
Anisa Ciaciura, a CCOM student, highlighted the event’s extensive outreach, with engagements across hundreds of congressional offices. This demonstrated the significant advocacy efforts for the osteopathic community's priorities. Meanwhile, Miranda DeBot, also from CCOM, stressed the importance of these legislative matters, particularly for rural communities, advocating for more residency opportunities and enhanced Medicare support to sustain local medical practices.
The event further served as an educational platform on healthcare policy advocacy, with participants like Bryan Liu valuing direct representative interactions as critical learning experiences. For Rhea Akhaury, understanding the community impact of healthcare policies was paramount, while Vani Ganesh emphasized the long-term benefits of student involvement in advocacy efforts.
Leadership within CCOM’s Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) chapter was highlighted, with students like Jackson Sweeney and Vani Ganesh assuming national roles. Their engagement with policymakers reinforced the potential influence medical students have in advocating for healthcare reform and establishing impactful relationships with legislative figures dedicated to supporting osteopathic medicine.
