Increased Satisfaction Through Digital Tools in Healthcare Insurance
The JD Power 2026 U.S. Healthcare Digital Experience Study reveals an increase in digital tools offered by health plans, resulting in enhanced member satisfaction. With insights from over 7,600 members in major Medicare Advantage and commercial health plans, the study showcases a positive correlation between the frequency of digital app usage and user satisfaction.
Eric McCready, JD Power's director of digital solutions, highlights the importance of these findings, noting the variation in digital proficiency within the healthcare sector. He emphasizes the diversity of customer segments interacting with health plans' digital platforms and their differing levels of digital readiness.
The report indicates that digitally focused health tools are becoming more popular, especially among those with commercial insurance. In 2026, 38% of these members used their health plan's digital app, up from 31% the previous year. However, the adoption rate among Medicare Advantage members fell to 20% from 24% last year. Although JD Power did not specify reasons for these trends, a generational gap, with younger, working-age individuals being more receptive to digital tools, may play a role.
Despite lower adoption rates, health plans see the potential to improve member satisfaction through digital tools. Notably, satisfaction with payer digital apps rises with frequent use, including among long-term Medicare Advantage members. Satisfaction scores for members in the same plan for over five years reached 655 out of 1,000, compared to 102 for those with less than a year.
McCready identifies potential challenges in bridging digital engagement gaps but sees opportunities in digital onboarding and member education. Such focus could enhance engagement continuity, with 76% of commercial members and 74% of Medicare Advantage members likely to continue using apps after positive experiences. Conversely, only 29% of commercial plan members and 21% of Medicare Advantage enrollees would continue usage following negative experiences.
The study also ranks health plans based on digital experience quality. Among commercial plans, Cigna Healthcare leads with a score of 684, followed by Premera Blue Cross at 682, and UnitedHealthcare at 672. In the Medicare Advantage category, UPMC Health Plan scores highest at 676, followed by Healthfirst at 671, and a tie between Devoted Health and UnitedHealthcare at 665.
These insights underscore the critical role of digital engagement in the evolving health insurance market. Insurers are focusing on bolstering digital literacy and enhancing user satisfaction with targeted digital strategies.
