UConn's Initiative for Health Equity in Connecticut
The UConn Health Disparities Institute (HDI) is spearheading a statewide initiative aimed at enhancing healthcare affordability to promote equity in Connecticut. This effort aligns with the state's 2026 Health Equity Week, running from April 6 to 11. In collaboration with Health Equity Solutions, this event encourages statewide participation to drive improvements in community health and wellbeing.
Ayesha R. Clarke, executive director of Health Equity Solutions, highlighted the significance of state involvement in shaping public health systems that benefit all residents. “We must all participate in building a healthier Connecticut,” Clarke stated, emphasizing a collective commitment to public health advancements.
Health Equity Leadership Roundtable
Central to the week’s events is the Health Equity Leadership Roundtable, scheduled for April 7 at the State Capitol. This roundtable will address how economic factors intersect with racial disparities to create barriers to health for Connecticut’s residents. Facilitated by Yvonne M. Alston of Indelible Impressions Consulting and Cecil Tengatenga of Connecticut Area Health Education Center, the discussion promises valuable insights.
The dialogue will be anchored in the Commission on Racial Equity in Public Health’s Strategic Plan, developed through HDI-led community evaluations. Dr. Jeff Hines of UConn reinforced the necessity of addressing economic challenges that impede health equity, stressing that open discussions about necessary policies and investments are crucial.
Institutional Efforts and Legislative Priorities
Dr. Andy Agwunobi, CEO of UConn Health, reiterated the institution's advocacy for equitable healthcare practices and reducing obstacles to quality care. UConn Health leverages events like these to better align institutional efforts with resident needs, highlighting the importance of collaborative strategies.
HDI underscores the role of civic engagement during Health Equity Week. Malia Hunt, a UConn student and HDI Fellow, contributed to legislative efforts focused on menopause equity, illustrating the impact students can have on policy processes. Throughout the week, HDI will present its 2026 Legislative Priorities, which include key policy areas such as menopause equity and healthcare affordability.
Radenka Maric, President of UConn, affirmed the University’s responsibility to support the state’s health and economic growth through ongoing research and educational initiatives. Dr. Linda Sprague Martinez, HDI Director, highlighted the need for collective action toward achieving health equity, encouraging all stakeholders to actively participate in challenging systemic barriers to health.
