Riverwood Healthcare Center Faces Medicare Payment Disruptions

Riverwood Healthcare Center, along with other rural hospitals across Minnesota and the nation, is confronting temporary disruptions in Medicare payment processing due to a transition within the federal system. Despite these financial bottlenecks, Riverwood continues to provide uninterrupted services to its patient population.

Earlier in the year, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) introduced a new billing and provider enrollment system aimed at enhancing administrative efficiency and oversight. However, the implementation has encountered technical difficulties, delaying the processing of Medicare claims for numerous critical access hospitals, including Riverwood.

Riverwood, serving nearly 33,000 residents through its clinics in Aitkin, Garrison, McGregor, and a critical access hospital, is awaiting $2.5 million in Medicare payments. Chief Financial Officer Casey Johnson expressed confidence in resolving the issue, noting, "We are experiencing delays in Medicare payments due to a national system transition... While this creates challenges, our team is working daily with Medicare representatives and we're encouraged by recent progress."

Despite the financial delay, Riverwood maintains full operational capacity across its clinics and hospital services, including emergency care. Management remains optimistic about the government's measures to address these challenges and is actively engaging with Medicare administrative contractors. Riverwood's proactive approach underscores its commitment to advocating for efficient payment solutions that benefit all rural hospitals navigating these system transitions.
