Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation Under Scrutiny for Costly Inefficiencies
The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI), established in 2010 to reduce costs and improve care under Medicare and Medicaid, has faced significant challenges and criticism regarding its effectiveness and management.
Initially projected by the Congressional Budget Office to save $34 billion over ten years, CMMI has instead resulted in an approximate $9 billion cost, with projections indicating an additional $1.3 billion expense over the next decade. Over its operational period, CMMI has implemented numerous payment model experiments, the vast majority of which have failed to generate savings or have increased healthcare costs and complexity for seniors.
