Military Health System Launches ILER for Enhanced Healthcare
The Military Health System is set to enhance service member and civilian personnel healthcare by launching the Individual Longitudinal Exposure Record (ILER). Effective March 23, 2026, this initiative will provide detailed data on environmental and occupational hazards encountered during military careers. The ILER system aggregates exposure data from various sources, including training, deployments, and duty assignments, ensuring comprehensive exposure monitoring.
Steve Jones, program director for exposure monitoring policy at the Office of the Assistant Secretary of War for Health Affairs, stated, “If you’ve ever wondered what exposures are listed, from what you may have encountered during service, ILER helps you see what is on record – in one place, securely, and for your benefit.” The collaboration between the Department of War and the Department of Veterans Affairs aims to deliver a detailed exposure history, thereby enabling healthcare providers to offer informed care.
Access to ILER will initially be available to active duty, National Guard, Reserve, and civilian personnel with a Common Access Card. Users can enhance accuracy by adding personal exposure information to the system. Beginning in fall 2026, veterans will also gain access to their records through the VA. The integration of ILER supports risk management and early interventions, bolstering individual healthcare and force readiness.
