AFM Health Clinic Supports Musicians in New Orleans Without Insurance
The American Federation of Musicians (AFM) hosted a health clinic in Treme, New Orleans, to support local musicians, many of whom face challenges due to the lack of health insurance. This event, held on March 21, provided free health screenings, including blood pressure, glucose levels, vision, and hearing checks, accessible to working musicians in the area. Such initiatives highlight the critical need for comprehensive healthcare coverage within the artistic community.
AFM representatives emphasized the pressing health concerns among musicians, who often contend with untreated conditions like high blood pressure and heart issues. Naydja CoJoe, treasurer and secretary of the AFM chapter, stressed the event’s importance, saying, “This is an opportunity for the AFM to give to the people we call our co-workers, colleagues, friends, and families.” Her vision is to establish these clinics as an annual initiative, ensuring musicians maintain good health, particularly with the festival season approaching.
