Ohio Car Insurance Rates Decrease Amid Rising Costs
Ohio's average full-coverage car insurance rates fell by 6% in 2025, even after experiencing a significant 44% rise since 2021, as highlighted in a new report published by Insurify, a platform specializing in insurance comparisons. Despite this increment, Ohio maintains relatively lower insurance costs compared to its neighboring states. For instance, Michigan drivers typically pay more than twice what Ohio drivers do, while Pennsylvania residents spend approximately $500 more annually.
According to Matt Brannon, an economic analyst, Ohio benefits from less severe weather conditions, contributing to lower insurance premiums. The 6% reduction in 2025 equaled an average savings of $86 for Ohio drivers, although premiums have increased by $953 since 2021. Factors influencing car insurance rates extend beyond individual driving histories. "Rates are often determined by geographic regions within a state," stated Dan Scroggins, Vice President of Personal Lines Insurance at AAA Club Alliance.
Local claim frequency and costs, along with rising litigation expenses, are key factors influencing insurance costs. "Litigation funding has notably increased injury claim costs, sometimes doubling or tripling expected payouts," Scroggins added. Personal driving history continues to affect individual premiums. Traffic violations and accidents significantly impact costs, independent of base rates set by carriers. Scroggins emphasizes the importance of considering driving behavior, distance, and policyholders as these elements contribute to personal insurance expenses.
Families adding young drivers face higher premiums due to their inexperience. Urban residents similarly incur increased rates due to heightened traffic and claim occurrences. Although city drivers in Ohio pay more than the state average, they still enjoy lower rates than many densely populated states, such as New York, where average premiums reach $3,019.
Brannon explained, "Ohio’s lesser density compared to urbanized states helps keep rates comparatively lower." Experts advocate for cost reduction strategies, such as bundling car insurance with homeowners or renters policies. Practicing safe driving and reducing travel can further influence costs positively. "Maintaining a safe driving record is crucial for managing insurance expenses," Brannon advised. By understanding these dynamics, policyholders can explore options to optimize their insurance strategies effectively.
