Severe Weather Impacts Insurance Claims in Columbus Area

Following a recent hailstorm that brought significant damage to vehicles and homes in Columbus and the surrounding areas, local body shops and roofing companies are preparing for an intense period of repair work. The severe weather, including wind speeds up to 60 mph and golf-ball-sized hail, resulted in over a hundred requests for repairs.

Andy Hatcher, owner of Allen’s Frame and Body Shop, noted an immediate uptick in inquiries, estimating approximately 50 calls from car owners since the storm. Hail damage typically affects vehicle hoods, roofs, and windshields, with repair costs ranging from $5,000 to $10,000. Factors like the vehicle's age, model, and specific repair needs play a role in determining costs.

Elsewhere, Bethany Gore of Alfa Insurance reported receiving around 100 calls, with 20 to 30 claims filed for vehicle and home damages primarily in New Hope and East Columbus. Comprehensive insurance coverage generally includes weather-related damage like hail, with deductibles between $250 and $500. Liability-only insurance, however, does not cover such damage.

Chris Hardin of Hardin’s Body and Glass anticipates completing all repair work for the 30 or so inquiries he received within three months. He manages a schedule of one to two vehicles daily to prevent backlogs. Similarly, Tyi Curry’s Bodyshop has consistently handled about 10 calls following the storm, reflecting the annual rise in weather-related damages typical for this time of year.

In addition to vehicle damage, the storm impacted local homes. T Miller’s Roofing has reported calls from 15 homeowners about roof repairs. The damage scale ranges from minor shingle replacements to entire roof replacements, with comprehensive repair costs between $12,000 and $15,000.

Gore advises homeowners to consult a local roofer before filing an insurance claim for potential roof damage, given the impact multiple claims can have on insurance records. Basic homeowners insurance policies typically involve deductibles ranging from $1,000 to $2,000.

Both vehicle and home repair businesses expect an extended period of heightened activity as they address the aftermath of this severe weather event, balancing customer needs with insurance considerations.
