Advancements in Medicare Technology Discussed at HIMSS Conference
At the HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition in Las Vegas, CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz emphasized the potential of advanced technology to enhance Medicare services and assist patients in managing healthcare costs. Addressing healthcare professionals, Oz highlighted the role of digital tools in early-stage care and at-home settings, underscoring their potential impact on healthcare expenses.
Oz noted that while physicians' earnings approximately match inflation rates, hospitals face higher costs due to staffing challenges. He proposed that technology could serve as a powerful tool to counteract these inflationary pressures and improve care quality. He encouraged the audience to champion technological advancements for patient benefits, pointing out the pressing need for action in the current healthcare climate.
During a dialogue with HIMSS President and CEO Hal Wolf, Oz discussed the roadmap for transforming American healthcare, underscoring the importance of integrating technological progress into existing systems. Despite federal funding aimed at supporting rural hospitals, Oz highlighted recruitment challenges, particularly in attracting behavioral health professionals to remote areas. This funding alone, he indicated, may not resolve systemic issues.
Amy Gleason, CMS Senior Advisor, advocated for patient empowerment through technology, envisioning a future where individuals can easily transfer their health information to providers by scanning QR codes, eliminating traditional paperwork. The goal is to transition patients from relying on unverified online sources to actively managing and sharing their health data with medical professionals.
