New York Business Owners Unite Against Rising Auto Insurance Premiums

A diverse group of over 30 small business owners from New York City is rallying behind Governor Kathy Hochul's initiative to combat auto insurance fraud, which they believe will provide significant financial relief. This coalition, representing businesses from the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan, plans to deliver their plea to Governor Hochul, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, emphasizing the need for swift action on escalating auto insurance premiums.

These business owners, including those operating delis, nail salons, auto repair shops, and laundromats, have experienced a substantial increase in insurance costs, with premiums rising by 50 to 100 percent since 2021. They argue these costs are unsustainable and threaten the viability of their businesses, which are key contributors to their local economies.

The group comprises a wide range of enterprises, such as Chinese-owned kitchen and cabinet shops in Flushing, Bangladeshi and South Asian businesses in Ozone Park, Black-owned bodegas and phone repair shops in Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights, and Latino-owned service businesses in the Bronx and Queens. They collectively call for legislative intervention to reform the current auto insurance framework.

The coalition’s letter highlights that for many small firms, insurance expenses rank just below payroll, forcing difficult decisions regarding staffing and cost management. They express robust support for Governor Hochul’s proposal to tackle the underlying issues driving up premiums, such as insurance fraud and exploitation of legal loopholes, ensuring that any resulting savings benefit both consumers and businesses.

José Bayona, representing Citizens for Affordable Rates, the advocacy group supporting this initiative, emphasized the pivotal role these businesses play in sustaining their communities. He pointed out that the rising costs act as a financial burden akin to a "fraud tax" that businesses can no longer manage. Citizens for Affordable Rates is actively campaigning for necessary policy changes to create a more stable insurance market.

Several businesses, including Abetx International Brokers, Flushing Auto Service, and Hunts Point Auto, have publicly endorsed the Governor’s initiative, underscoring the broad support for insurance reform within the small business community. Citizens for Affordable Rates continues to work toward reducing auto insurance costs through advocacy and policy discussions, aiming to establish a more affordable insurance environment for New York residents.
