WPSI Recommends Patient Navigation for Enhanced Cancer Screening

The Women's Preventive Services Initiative (WPSI) recently made waves in December 2024 by recommending patient navigation services to enhance breast and cervical cancer screenings. This initiative aims to increase screening uptake by customizing services to meet patient-specific needs. Patient navigation offers personal engagement, whether in-person or virtual, and provides comprehensive support including assessment, planning, system navigation, and access to essential services like translation and transportation.

A newly developed course, "WPSI Recommendation: Patient Navigation Services for Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening," educates participants on the evidence underpinning this recommendation. This is crucial as it underscores how such navigation can optimize the efficiency and reach of screening services. As this concept is relatively novel in clinical practice, the course assists clinicians in understanding insurance coverage for these services, set to be available at no extra cost for eligible patients starting in 2026.

Participants who complete the course will articulate WPSI's mission, identify the processes used to develop the recommendation, evaluate supporting research, and implement the recommendation in clinical settings. This educational offering is part of a larger program that includes two additional courses: one on the general overview of WPSI and another on breast cancer screening for average-risk women. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) offers the course, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, enabling physicians to earn up to 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
