NYC Child Care Trust Fund Offers Financial Relief for Union Members
New York City, known for its high cost of living, presents significant challenges for families seeking affordable child care. To address this, the DC 37 Child Care Trust Fund has been established to offer financial support to eligible union members as part of a new initiative.
Under the 2021-2026 Economic Agreement with the City of New York, the fund allocates $3 million to provide qualified members with annual reimbursements of $500 for licensed care services or $250 for informal care. This initiative aims to alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with child care expenses for city workers.
Union Commitment to Cost Relief
Henry Garrido, Executive Director of District Council 37, emphasized the union's commitment to easing child care costs, stating that establishing the Trust was a key part of their latest citywide contract negotiations. These reimbursement applications have already processed $100,000 during the program’s initial phase.
Members seeking to apply for these benefits can find forms on DC 37's website or contact the Child Care Trust directly. The application process includes a two-week review period once submitted. Gabrielle Rolling, a research scientist with Local 3005, highlighted the program's positive impact for working parents, underscoring the financial relief and reduced stress it provides.
Application Process Efficiency
Moira Dolan, Administrator of the Child Care Trust, advises parents to ensure that a child’s birth certificate is on file with the DC 37 Health & Security Plan to expedite the application review. While registration as a dependent is not mandatory, it is recommended for families benefiting from the Trust’s supplemental plan.
Eligible members are those covered under the city’s economic agreement, spanning various departments and institutions. Conversely, those not included, such as EMS workers, may consider advocating for their inclusion in future contract discussions. Reimbursements cover licensed facilities undergoing regular inspections and can extend to informal arrangements with personal acquaintances.
Shaun D. Francois I, President of DC 37 and Local 372, supports the fund's utilization, highlighting its importance as a financial resource. The union aims to expand the program based on member participation and necessity, considering increases in the allocated funds.
