Increase in Aspergillosis Diagnoses: Addressing Public Health Needs

A recent study published in Open Forum Infectious Diseases reveals a dramatic increase in aspergillosis diagnoses in the United States, with annual figures rising by over 5% from 2013 to 2023. Aspergillosis, caused by inhaling Aspergillus spores, significantly threatens individuals with lung diseases or weakened immune systems, demonstrating a mortality rate near 20%. The study also highlights increasing concerns about antifungal resistance, which affects treatment success.

Globally, around 250,000 invasive aspergillosis cases and over 3 million chronic cases occur annually. However, comprehensive U.S. data remains inadequate due to limited surveillance. Previous research primarily targeted small patient groups or specific aspergillosis forms. Conducted by a team from the University of California, Berkeley, the study employed electronic health records from a large health insurance database, analyzing data from over 76 million insured individuals across 142 health systems.

The analysis identified 20,764 cases of aspergillosis between 2013 and 2023, noting a prevalence rate of 15.26 diagnoses per 100,000 person-years. Before COVID-19, the annual increase was 5.3%, peaking at 18.04 per 100,000 in 2022. Among U.S. regions, Rhode Island had the highest prevalence, while Utah recorded the lowest. Diagnosis rates were higher in men, adults over 65, and urban residents. Notably, the pandemic shifted racial diagnosis trends, with a post-pandemic rise among Hispanic, Latino, and minority populations, attributed to disparities in baseline health and healthcare access.

Researchers suggest these insights may facilitate earlier clinical detection of aspergillosis, particularly in atypical high-risk groups, advocating for improved diagnostic access and enhanced fungal disease surveillance to address public health needs effectively.
