Impact of Fire on Small Business Operations in NYC: A Call for Support
In Brooklyn, New York, Cool Hand Movers has temporarily suspended its moving bin rental services following a significant fire on January 21 that devastated their operations facility at the Red Hook waterfront. This incident highlights the increasing vulnerability of small businesses in New York City, where escalating costs have tightened operational margins.
The fire occurred amidst rising financial pressures from operating expenses such as liability and auto insurance premiums, commercial rent, and transportation costs. These fixed expenses have strained small businesses like Cool Hand Movers, diminishing the financial flexibility needed to withstand unexpected disruptions. The subsequent snowstorm only compounded the recovery challenges for the company.
Ashley Graber, co-owner of Cool Hand Movers, emphasized the extensive infrastructure loss due to the fire and its impact on their business operations. "Despite the immediate and incredible efforts of the FDNY, the fire wiped out infrastructure we spent years building and reinvesting in. We are forced to pause our moving bin rentals at a time when we need that income the most," she stated.
Co-owner Matt Graber stressed the importance of small business continuity as an economic objective for New York City’s administration. He expressed optimism about Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s commitment to enhancing small business operability and urged that service-based industries like theirs be included in supportive measures. "It's essential that service-based businesses like movers, trades, and logistics companies are fully included in these efforts. We don’t fit the storefront model, but our ability to operate depends on physical equipment, storage, and insurance just as much as any NYC small business," said Matt Graber.
The company is urging city leaders to focus on policies that address the increasing burden of fixed costs and the impact of disruptions, especially for service-oriented businesses. Ashley Graber added, "Small service businesses like ours are part of the city’s everyday infrastructure. If New York wants us to survive and keep serving residents, support systems and policy frameworks need to reflect how narrow the margins have become."
Cool Hand Movers, a company owned by Matt and Ashley Graber, provides moving and packing services, including reusable moving solutions, within the Greater New York area. Their call for supportive policies underscores a critical need for recognizing the unique challenges faced by service-based small businesses.
