CFA Endorses Becerra and Thurmond for California Gubernatorial Primary
The California Faculty Association (CFA) has announced its endorsement of Xavier Becerra and Tony Thurmond as candidates in the upcoming California gubernatorial primary scheduled for June 2026. Both candidates have shown a commitment to initiatives that resonate with CFA priorities, particularly in enhancing higher education.
Melina Abdullah, chair of the CFA Political Action and Legislation Committee and a professor at CSU Los Angeles, underscored the significance of supporting candidates whose values align with the union's goals. She stated, “Both Xavier Becerra and Tony Thurmond have a demonstrated commitment to deeply investing in quality, accessible, liberatory public higher education.”
The endorsement process by the CFA was rigorous, with invitations extended to 113 candidates to undergo a comprehensive evaluation. This process included submitting detailed questionnaires and participating in a February 11 Endorsement Forum, where candidates addressed critical issues facing the education sector.
Margarita Berta-Ávila, CFA president and professor at Sacramento State, praised both Becerra and Thurmond for their dedication to worker interests and social justice principles. Their commitments to these causes have profoundly impressed the CFA, securing their endorsements.
Xavier Becerra's extensive experience includes his contributions to passing the Affordable Care Act during his congressional tenure, alongside serving as Attorney General of California and U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary. He focuses on reducing living expenses and fostering an inclusive economy.
Tony Thurmond has prioritized educational improvements, advocating for initiatives like universal meals and mental health support as the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. He pledges consistent funding for the California State University system, emphasizing legislative measures to support educational advancements.
The California primary will take place on June 2, with the CFA actively mobilizing support for Becerra and Thurmond. The CFA, with its 29,000 faculty members, is headquartered in Sacramento and is devoted to promoting racial and social justice in education.
