Pennsylvania Doctor Convicted in Major Insurance Fraud Scheme
A recent conviction shines a spotlight on extensive insurance fraud involving health care and wire fraud, committed by Dr. Neil K. Anand of Bensalem, Pennsylvania.
Anand was found guilty of multiple counts, including health care fraud and conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. Central to the fraud were 'Goody Bags' of unnecessary prescription medications provided by Anand’s in-house pharmacies to patients, linked to receiving prescriptions for controlled substances.
These actions led to a substantial illicit gain, with Medicare and other insurers defrauded out of over $2.3 million. The case was investigated by several major inspectorate bodies including HHS-OIG and OPM-OIG, and prosecuted under the Health Care Fraud Strike Force Program, which has been active in addressing such fraud schemes nationally. Anand now faces up to 130 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for late August.
