SSA Advances on GPO-WEP Benefit Recalculations, Aiding Millions
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has made significant strides in recalculating and disbursing benefits following the recent repeal of the government pension offset (GPO) and windfall elimination provision (WEP). These changes have positively impacted approximately 3.2 million individuals by increasing monthly benefits and providing retroactive payments.
The SSA has employed automation technologies to accelerate the adjustment of benefits, successfully updating 76 percent of affected records since the repeal's enactment. Additionally, the SSA is addressing more complex cases manually, aiming to complete all updates by early November 2025. This development is also prompting those previously ineligible for spousal or survivor benefits due to the offset by GPO to apply, with over 130,000 new applications already processed.
