SSA Enhances Telephone Claim Security with New Anti-Fraud Technology

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has implemented a new fraud prevention technology for claims processed via telephone. This initiative, launching on April 14, 2025, follows criticism for the previously retracted policy requiring in-person identity verification, which excluded those unable to use the SSA's online services. The SSA's updated approach integrates sophisticated anti-fraud technology to enhance security while maintaining accessibility. This technology detects anomalies in account activity, flagging suspicious cases for in-person verification to ensure legitimate beneficiary access.

These improvements come as part of broader efforts by the Department of Government Efficiency to reduce waste and fraud in public spending. Notably, between 2013 and 2018, fraudulent manipulations of Social Security direct deposits defrauded approximately $33.5 million from nearly 21,000 recipients. These updates represent the SSA's commitment to secure and flexible service delivery, improving fraud detection and offering beneficiaries more convenience in managing their claims.
