UnitedHealth Dominates Medicare Advantage Payments: Study
A recent study highlights how health insurers, particularly those in the Medicare Advantage sector, are incentivized to diagnose additional health conditions for their members to receive higher reimbursements from the government. UnitedHealth Group, the leading player in this field, has been especially effective at maximizing its earnings through these additional diagnoses. In 2021 alone, Medicare Advantage insurers garnered an estimated $33 billion due to these practices, with UnitedHealth accounting for 42% of that amount. Other competitors like Humana and Aetna received significantly smaller portions, at 19% and 6%, respectively. This trend raises questions about the implications of such practices on the healthcare system and patient care.
