Congress Extends Medicare Telehealth Flexibilities Until 2025
Congress has approved a continuing resolution funding the government until September 30, 2025, which extends Medicare telehealth flexibilities for another six months. This extension addresses previous concerns about the expiration of certain Medicare waivers that were especially important for providing telehealth services in rural and underserved communities. The healthcare industry and provider groups have expressed approval for this extension, but emphasize the need for a long-term solution to ensure continued access to telehealth services.
Section 2207 of the resolution is similar to a previous measure passed in December 2024, which temporarily extended these flexibilities until March 2025. With this new extension, all participating Medicare providers can continue to offer telehealth services until September 30, 2025. However, as this deadline approaches, healthcare providers are encouraged to consider compliance strategies with legal counsel to prepare for the potential expiration of these waivers.
