Alliance Critiques MedPAC’s Recommendations for Home Health Services
The National Alliance for Care at Home has responded to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission’s (MedPAC) March 2025 Report to Congress, which provides guidance on Medicare payment policies including home health and hospice services. The Alliance's CEO, Dr. Steve Landers, criticized the report for underestimating the role of home health and hospice providers, calling the suggested cuts and stagnant payment rates dangerous for patient access and care quality.
Dr. Landers emphasizes the importance of timely access to home health services, asserting that inadequate referrals can lead to higher mortality rates. He argues that the Commission's assessment of access to services based on the mere presence of an agency in a zip code is misleading. The Alliance maintains that strategic investments in home health and hospice services are essential for improving overall patient care and reducing unnecessary hospitalizations, ultimately saving Medicare resources.
The MedPAC recommendations, while influential, require legislative action to be implemented as they serve only as advisory. The Alliance remains dedicated to advocating for the needs of home health providers and ensuring Congress understands the implications of potential funding restrictions on patient care and the sustainability of these services.
