UnityPoint Health Acquires MercyOne: Insurance Plan Changes Ahead

In September, UnityPoint Health began operations at the former MercyOne facility in Sioux City. With this strategic acquisition, UnityPoint Health committed to recognizing existing insurance plans for MercyOne patients through the end of 2025. Talks are ongoing to possibly extend these arrangements until March 2026, aligning with regulatory compliance requirements.

Potential Disruptions and Regional Impact

Shannon Stewart, a Sioux City-based insurance broker, cautioned about the disruption potential if current insurance plans are no longer honored by UnityPoint Health. This situation could limit industry competition, impacting pricing and the range of services available for patients. Particularly vulnerable are insurance plans accessed via the federal marketplace, known for their affordability, which might force patients to seek non-emergency care in neighboring regions like Sioux Falls or Omaha.

Consumer Concerns and Insurance Provider Changes

Consumer Pete Iversen noted the pressures of rising health premiums and fewer local options, highlighting fears over the exclusion of Oscar, his previously preferred provider, from the UnityPoint Health network after January 1st. The merger of major hospitals in Sioux City further tightens the network, increasing the likelihood of necessary travel for medical care. Affected insurance providers include Ambetter Health, Centivo, Mount Carmel MediGold – Medicare Advantage, Partners Direct Health, Wellcare Medicare Advantage, and Oscar.

Ongoing Negotiations and Patient Guidance

UnityPoint Health is diligently working to extend temporary agreements with several insurers until March 31, 2026, ensuring continued patient access and care. Patients should check with their insurance carriers about network status during this period. It is advised that consumers review their insurance options during the federal health exchange open enrollment, ending January 15, 2026, to maintain access to UnityPoint Health services throughout the year.
