WHO Review Highlights Lithuania's Health System Challenges Amid Rising Migrant Influx
Lithuania has seen a significant rise in refugees and migrants, notably following the 2021 Belarus border crisis and the large displacement from Ukraine in 2022. As of late 2024, over 91,000 Ukrainians were registered in Lithuania, with around 47,000 having temporary protection status. Along with Belarusian nationals, Russian citizens, and other migrants covered by compulsory health insurance, this influx presents new challenges to Lithuania's healthcare system, including ensuring continuity of care, language interpretation support, and equitable service access across municipalities. A comprehensive review by the World Health Organization (WHO) in partnership with Lithuania's Ministry of Health evaluates the healthcare system's capacity to serve this diverse population. The analysis identifies health challenges faced by refugees and migrants and assesses current policies and infrastructure designed to address these issues. The report also outlines actionable recommendations aimed at overcoming access barriers and enhancing Lithuania's long-term healthcare system resilience for migrant populations.
