Audit Reveals Noncompliance in New Jersey Nursing Homes' Background Checks

A recent audit found that 11 out of 12 nursing homes in New Jersey failed to comply with Federal regulations requiring background checks that disqualify individuals with certain histories from employment. Among 120 employees reviewed, 33 cases either lacked compliance or documentation of background checks, posing risks to resident safety. The issues arose due to inadequate employee sampling during recertification surveys and insufficient procedures at nursing homes for conducting thorough background checks. The report recommends that New Jersey enhance its monitoring processes and provide clear guidance to nursing homes to ensure all staff undergo federally mandated screening protocols. New Jersey has outlined steps it has taken and plans to address the deficiencies but has not formally agreed or disagreed with the recommendations. These findings relate to regulatory compliance critical in protecting nursing home residents from potential abuse or mistreatment.
