UNC Health and Cigna Reach New In-Network Agreement for 65,000 Patients

UNC Health and Cigna have reached a new contract agreement that reinstates in-network status for over 65,000 Cigna patients at UNC Health facilities. The lapse in contract since November 30 had rendered these patients out-of-network, impacting coverage for UNC Health clinics and hospitals. UNC Health will refund Cigna-covered patients who paid out of pocket for services during the gap period as appropriate. The negotiations faced challenges including UNC Health's request for a 32% rate increase over three years and disagreements on negotiation tactics. Both UNC Health and Cigna emphasize that the new agreement aims to improve patient access, reduce healthcare costs, and facilitate cooperation between payer and provider. This deal ensures continuity of affordable and quality care for insured patients across North Carolina.
