North Carolina Roofing Contractor Arrested for $30,000 Insurance Fraud Scheme
Robert Bentley, a senior project manager at A&M Premier Roofing & Construction in Charlotte, North Carolina, was arrested on felony charges of insurance fraud, conspiracy, and attempting to obtain property by false pretense. The charges stem from a scheme where Bentley and a co-worker allegedly damaged the roof of a Wake County home and submitted a fraudulent insurance claim of $30,000 to North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance Group, claiming the damage was due to wind and hail. The investigation was part of a two-month sting operation coordinated between the North Carolina Department of Insurance fraud investigators and the Farm Bureau’s Special Investigations Unit, which employed engineering experts, advanced surveillance, and a bait house tactic to detect fraudulent roofing claims. A second arrest related to this case is pending. The case highlights ongoing efforts by insurers and regulators to combat roofing scams, which inflate insurance costs for companies and homeowners. North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey and North Carolina Farm Bureau President Shawn Harding emphasized the seriousness of these crimes and the cooperative approach taken to hold offenders accountable and prevent future fraud in the roofing insurance market. The North Carolina Department of Insurance also encourages anonymous reporting of suspected insurance fraud to further support enforcement initiatives.
