National Life Group Announces Leadership Transition at Equity Services Inc.
National Life Group has announced a leadership change at its broker-dealer and registered investment adviser arm, Equity Services, Inc. (ESI). Ata Azarshahi, the current President and CEO of ESI, will retire at the end of 2025, concluding a 40-year career in financial services and 13 years with National Life Group. During his tenure since 2013, Azarshahi has led strategic initiatives across the company's life, annuity, and wealth divisions, significantly contributing to ESI's growth. Under Azarshahi’s leadership, ESI was recognized as the fastest-growing broker-dealer in 2024 for total sales deposits according to industry data from LIMRA, reflecting strong asset management performance. Alex David will succeed Azarshahi as President and CEO of ESI effective December 16, 2025. David brings over three decades of leadership experience with prominent firms including Raymond James Financial Services and Stifel Independent Advisors. His previous roles involved managing large advisor networks, overseeing assets exceeding $100 billion, and driving transformative growth in revenue and assets under management. David’s background includes leadership in branch development, marketing, and advisor recruitment, making him well-positioned to continue ESI’s expansion and advisor-focused initiatives. National Life Group also appointed Brian Nelson as Head of Growth Strategy at ESI, responsible for accelerating advisor growth and enhancing practice management programs. Nelson has extensive experience in revenue growth and operational leadership from his prior roles at Atria Wealth Solutions, Advisor Group, and Fidelity. The leadership changes at Equity Services, Inc. underscore National Life Group’s commitment to strengthening its broker-dealer platform, driving advisor success, and growing assets under management. National Life Group, founded in 1848, offers life insurance and annuities across the U.S. through an independent distribution model. Equity Services, Inc., founded in 1968, operates as a broker-dealer and investment adviser focused on advisor growth and client service, supported by National Life Group’s longstanding financial stability. The transition reflects a strategic emphasis on experienced leadership to maintain competitiveness in the evolving wealth management and brokerage industry. The appointments are expected to reinforce National Life Group’s industry position by enhancing operational performance and supporting scalable expansion of financial professional networks.
