Florida Advances Amendment to Raise Property Tax Exemptions for Homeowners

A proposed constitutional amendment in Florida, HJR 209, aims to expand property tax exemptions for homeowners, particularly targeting assessed home values between $25,000 and $250,000, excluding school taxes. This amendment was recently approved by the House Ways and Means Committee with a 10-5 vote and will be considered by the full Florida House in the 2026 legislative session starting January. Additional proposals under review include eliminating non-school homestead property taxes for seniors and allowing the transfer of tax benefits to new properties. If passed by the legislature, these changes will require at least 60% voter approval in the November election to be enacted.
