The treatment costs for diabetes in the U.S. reached $153.2 billion annually in 2021-2022, averaging $5,810 per treated adult. Approximately 10.2% of adults aged 18 and older received diabetes treatment, with the highest prevalence among those aged 65 and older (21.6%). The study used data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS-HC) to analyze healthcare use and expenditures related to diabetes treatment.
