CMS Indefinitely Postpones Skilled Nursing Facility Ownership Revalidation Deadline
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has indefinitely postponed the mandatory off-cycle revalidation deadline for skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) to submit expanded ownership and business relationship information. This marks the fourth delay of the deadline originally set for January 1, 2026. The postponement follows reports of technical difficulties with the CMS PECOS provider enrollment system and logistical challenges cited by providers and associations. While the ownership transparency requirements remain official policy, CMS has yet to announce a new deadline. The American Health Care Association (AHCA) played a key role in advocating for relief, citing risks of payment suspension due to system issues. Although providers who have already received requests for additional information are advised to comply by specified dates, CMS and AHCA encourage continued readiness for future compliance once new guidance is issued. The expanded reporting rules require all federally funded nursing facilities to disclose detailed ownership interests, including individuals and entities with controlling influence down to vendor and volunteer levels, under penalty of Medicare certification suspension or revocation. AHCA emphasizes the importance of transparency but stresses that patient care continuity takes precedence amid administrative delays. This development highlights ongoing challenges in regulatory compliance, data reporting infrastructure, and enforcement in the skilled nursing sector, impacting payer/provider operations and oversight.
