Aetna Reinstates Providence Oregon Hospitals as In-Network for Commercial Plans
Aetna and Providence Health & Services have resolved their previous network dispute, reinstating Providence facilities as in-network for Aetna commercial plan members across Oregon as of December 1. The multi-year agreement comes nearly a year after Providence was dropped from Aetna's network due to disagreements over rate increases amid rising healthcare costs. This network restoration expands access for tens of thousands of Oregon residents insured through Aetna's commercial plans, including those under self-insured employer plans administered by Aetna. However, the agreement limits Medicare Advantage in-network coverage to Providence facilities only in Southern Oregon, reflecting a smaller footprint of Aetna Medicare Advantage members statewide. Federal data reveals roughly 14,000 Oregonians are enrolled in Aetna Medicare Advantage plans, whereas commercial plan enrollment exceeds 50,000, with an additional 250,000 under related self-insured arrangements. The deal potentially improves affordability and provider access, supporting ongoing needs of Oregon healthcare consumers and payer/provider collaboration within the state's health insurance market.
