Alabama Hospitals Face Financial Strain if ACA Tax Credits Expire in 2025
Washington is expected to vote on a three-year extension of the enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits, currently set to expire at the end of 2025. The expiration could result in approximately 100,000 Alabamians losing health insurance coverage, according to the Alabama Hospital Association. This loss would increase the uninsured population, escalating financial strain on hospitals, especially in rural areas where uncompensated care costs are significant. The Alabama Hospital Association reports that hospitals currently incur an average of $650 million in uncompensated care, a burden expected to grow if the tax credits lapse. Loss of coverage may lead patients to forego routine care, subsequently increasing emergency room visits, which strains hospital resources and potentially extends wait times. The increased financial pressure may force some rural hospitals to reconsider their operational models, including possible conversion to rural emergency hospitals.
