Overview of U.S. State Drug Price Transparency Laws and Reporting Requirements
Since California introduced drug price transparency legislation in 2017, over 30 states have implemented similar laws aimed at increasing prescription drug affordability. These laws mandate various entities such as drug manufacturers, health plans, and pharmacy benefit managers to report detailed data on drug pricing, enabling states to analyze cost drivers within the drug supply chain. The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) provides resources including comparative charts, legislation, regulations, datasets, and reports to support these efforts at the state level. These initiatives facilitate monitoring of high drug price increases and provide actionable insights for policy and regulatory bodies to address cost challenges in the pharmaceutical sector.
