NNU Nurses Rally with Congress to Demand ACA Subsidy Extension and Medicare for All
On December 3, nurses represented by National Nurses United (NNU), the country's largest nurses union, participated in a protest and rally at Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C. The demonstration, joined by several members of Congress, aimed to urge legislative action on extending Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax subsidies and advancing Medicare for All. The expiration of ACA subsidies threatens to increase marketplace premiums dramatically by 2026, adversely affecting over 20 million Americans. In response to these risks, nurses called for immediate extensions of the subsidies and broader healthcare reforms to ensure access to affordable care. NNU advocates for Medicare for All, proposing a single-payer system to reduce disparities, control healthcare costs, and guarantee access to quality care as a fundamental right. Congressional supporters highlighted the ongoing challenges within the U.S. healthcare system, including issues like medical debt, underinsurance, and prohibitive costs of treatment, emphasizing the need for substantial reforms. Remarks from figures such as Senator Bernie Sanders and Representatives Ro Khanna and Pramila Jayapal underlined the widespread public backing for Medicare for All and the urgency of preventing premium hikes. The rally also addressed the impact of the current system on healthcare workers, with warnings about moral injury and workforce attrition. National Nurses United continues to represent over 225,000 nurses across multiple states, focusing on advocacy for systemic healthcare changes.
