The Swedish Club Expands into US Market with New York Office Opening

The Swedish Club has opened its first office in the United States, strategically located in New York City, marking a significant step in its global expansion strategy. This move aims to enhance operational efficiency, improve member engagement, and bolster the club’s competitiveness in the US and Latin American maritime insurance sectors. Establishing a physical presence in one of the world’s largest shipping markets enables the club to respond more promptly to member needs and strengthen local relationships with shipping clients and brokers. Ian Duthie has been appointed as the regional executive director for the Americas. With over 30 years of experience in marine insurance and commercial vessel operations, including senior roles in major US shipping organizations and the Britannia P&I Club, Duthie will be instrumental in developing the New York office. His leadership will focus on expanding local partnerships, managing member engagement, and shaping the strategic direction of the club in the Americas. The Swedish Club’s expansion aligns with a growing trend of international insurers establishing operations in the United States to tap into its substantial premium volumes, diverse specialty lines, and robust regulatory environment. The presence in the US market facilitates access to local talent and strengthens relationships with brokers and managing general agents (MGAs), which enhances responsiveness to evolving market demands. Specialty and niche sectors such as marine and catastrophe insurance are significant drivers behind foreign insurers’ investment in US operations. By establishing a foothold in New York, The Swedish Club aims to capitalize on these growth opportunities, reinforcing its position within the competitive marine insurance landscape. Thomas Nordberg, managing director of The Swedish Club, highlights the importance of this expansion as a major milestone, emphasizing that Duthie's expertise will be vital in establishing a credible and enduring presence in the Western Hemisphere. The new office is poised to deliver improved service delivery and operational responsiveness, serving as a foundation for continued growth across the Americas region.
