2000 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R: Ford’s High-Performance Comeback

At the end of the 1990s, Ford faced significant challenges with the 1999 SVT Cobra Mustang, which introduced a new 32-valve, aluminum-block 4.6-liter V-8 engine promising 320 horsepower. However, intake and exhaust issues resulted in disappointing dyno results and a recall of nearly 8,100 units. Performance figures included sub-5 second 0-60 mph times and a top speed limited to 175 mph. The Cobra R was recognized as the fastest and most capable Mustang of its era upon release. It served as a technical foundation for later models, notably the 2003 supercharged SVT Cobra, which offered increased power and performance. This period marked a transition where Ford reasserted the Mustang's competitive standing in the muscle car market following setbacks with earlier models. The 2000 Cobra R retains significance among collectors and enthusiasts, with well-preserved examples appreciating substantially in value. Ford's strategy included simultaneously developing race-focused models such as the Mustang FR500 to advance racing technology alongside street-legal performance variants.
