Santam Launches Lloyd’s Syndicate 1918 to Expand International Insurance Footprint
Santam, a South African short-term insurer, has received Lloyd's approval to commence underwriting through its new Syndicate 1918 starting January 1, 2026. This approval follows a prior in-principle license granted in July and marks the completion of required operational procedures for the syndicate. The initiative aligns with Santam Group's strategic plan to expand its international business footprint and diversify its operations.\n\n Santam has assembled an experienced leadership team for Syndicate 1918, appointing Rob Vetch, with three decades of global reinsurance experience, as CEO and CFO. Simon Clapham, a veteran with over 45 years in the industry, will serve as Chief Underwriting Officer and active underwriter, while Richard Weston will act as Chief Actuary and Chief Risk Officer, bringing extensive London market experience. Carla Jordan has been named Chief Engagement and Portfolio Officer, adding 25 years of reinsurance expertise.\n\n The syndicate aims to underwrite a variety of classes, including cyber, energy, financial institutions, marine, political violence and terrorism, professional indemnity, and property insurance. It projects gross written premiums exceeding £300 million ($396.43 million) for 2026, indicating significant market ambitions.\n\n Lloyd's operates as a partially mutualised insurance marketplace that leverages member syndicates to pool capital and underwrite risks across more than 200 territories worldwide. Santam Syndicate 1918's launch represents a scalable and efficient platform for Santam’s international growth strategy known as FutureFit2030.\n\n Additionally, Santam recently agreed to acquire a 60% stake in NMS Insurance Services, a registered micro-insurer in South Africa authorized for both general and life insurance, from Sanlam Life Insurance. This deal further enhances Santam's market presence and aligns with its diversification goals. The establishment of the Lloyd's syndicate and strategic acquisitions underline Santam's broader expansion efforts in the global insurance landscape.
