ESPN Launches 19th Annual V Week for Cancer Research with Principal Partnership
ESPN is launching its 19th Annual V Week for Cancer Research starting on Giving Tuesday, December 2, continuing through December 14. This initiative raises funds for the V Foundation for Cancer Research, which was founded by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano. All funds raised during this period are dedicated exclusively to cancer research. To date, ESPN has helped generate over $264 million to support the fight against cancer, demonstrating substantial ongoing commitment to this cause within the sports and media communities. Principal Financial Group is the presenting sponsor for this year's V Week, marking the first time a presenting sponsor has joined the event. Principal and its employees have initiated a $1 million match challenge, meaning that every donation made during V Week will be doubled by the Principal Foundation. This partnership underscores a corporate commitment to philanthropy and wellness while amplifying the impact of fundraising efforts for groundbreaking cancer research. The week-long event will include storytelling and programming focused on the intersection of cancer's impact on sports and the broader importance of research and support for those affected. ESPN aims to leverage its media platforms to raise awareness and drive donations through compelling content and participation by athletes, coaches, and fans. This approach aims to sustain momentum and enhance public engagement in cancer research funding. Statistically, the number of cancer survivors in the United States is growing, with an estimated 18.1 million survivors as of 2022, projected to increase to 26 million by 2040 according to the National Cancer Institute. This highlights the critical need for continued investment in research to address long-term survivorship and treatment advancements. The V Foundation operates with an endowment that covers administrative costs, ensuring that 100% of direct donations go to cancer research grants. Since its establishment in 1993, the foundation has awarded over $458 million in research funding, reinforcing its role as a key player in advancing scientific breakthroughs. Its rigorous grant process and collaboration with leading scientists emphasize effectiveness and transparency in the use of charitable funds. Principal Foundation's involvement aligns with its broader mission to support community well-being and financial security. Their philanthropic activities include backing initiatives that promote access to essential needs and social cohesion. The partnership with ESPN and the V Foundation showcases a strategic use of corporate social responsibility to support health-related causes with widespread societal impact.
