Louisiana Holds Over $900M in Unclaimed Property, Returns $70M in 2025

The Louisiana State Treasurer's Office currently holds over $900 million in unclaimed property for current and former residents, setting a record by returning $70.6 million to more than 160,000 residents in 2025. Unclaimed property consists of abandoned financial assets such as unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, uncashed payroll checks, stock dividends, and utility deposit refunds. The average payout per claim is approximately $900, with variations across different parishes in Louisiana. Real estate and vehicles are excluded from unclaimed property definitions in the state.
