Cigna-HealthSpring is a subsidiary of Cigna Corporation that specializes in providing healthcare coverage to Medicare beneficiaries. Known for its focus on innovative health solutions, Cigna-HealthSpring plays a significant role in the Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement Insurance markets, positioning itself as a trusted partner for insurance professionals navigating the complexities of senior healthcare coverage.

Cigna-HealthSpring was originally founded as HealthSpring, Inc. in 2000 by Harold and Chris W. McCall, who aimed to create a healthcare organization focused on delivering high-quality care to seniors. The company initially operated as a regional health plan in Texas, gradually expanding its presence across the United States, particularly in the Medicare Advantage space.

In 2012, HealthSpring was acquired by Cigna Corporation, enabling it to leverage Cigna’s extensive resources and capabilities. This acquisition allowed Cigna-HealthSpring to enhance its offerings, integrating Cigna’s broad network of providers and comprehensive health services into its Medicare plans.

Cigna-HealthSpring primarily focuses on Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement Insurance, providing a variety of plans that cater to the diverse needs of seniors. The company emphasizes coordinated care, preventive services, and wellness initiatives to improve health outcomes for its members.

Cigna-HealthSpring also offers specialized programs that address specific health issues, including chronic disease management, behavioral health support, and access to telehealth services. These programs are designed to provide comprehensive coverage and support to members, enhancing their overall healthcare experience.

Cigna-HealthSpring operates under the financial strength of Cigna Corporation, which reported revenues exceeding $180 billion in 2023. This financial backing enables Cigna-HealthSpring to offer competitive pricing and maintain high standards of service for its members.

The company holds an A (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best, reflecting its strong financial stability and ability to meet its obligations to policyholders. This rating instills confidence among insurance professionals and their clients regarding the reliability of Cigna-HealthSpring’s products.

One notable aspect of Cigna-HealthSpring's history is its focus on integrating technology into its healthcare delivery model. The company has been proactive in adopting digital health tools and telemedicine solutions, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which enhanced access to care for its members.

Another interesting anecdote involves Cigna-HealthSpring’s commitment to community engagement. The company has a history of participating in local health fairs, educational seminars, and outreach programs to promote wellness and preventive care among seniors. This community-oriented approach has helped strengthen its brand and build trust with members and insurance agents alike.

Pros:
- Strong Financial Backing: Cigna-HealthSpring benefits from the financial stability and extensive resources of Cigna Corporation, ensuring long-term reliability for policyholders.

- Comprehensive Medicare Offerings: The company provides a variety of Medicare Advantage and Supplement plans tailored to meet diverse senior healthcare needs.

- Innovative Care Coordination: Cigna-HealthSpring emphasizes coordinated care and wellness programs, enhancing health outcomes for its members.

- Community Engagement: The company's involvement in local health initiatives and outreach programs fosters trust and strengthens relationships with members.

Cons:
- Competitive Marketplace: Cigna-HealthSpring faces significant competition in the Medicare Advantage space, requiring continuous innovation to differentiate itself from other insurers.

- Complex Product Structures: The variety of plans and options may lead to confusion among clients, necessitating clear communication and guidance from insurance professionals.

- Higher Premiums: Cigna-HealthSpring's premiums may be higher than those of some competitors, which could limit its attractiveness to cost-sensitive seniors.

Cigna-HealthSpring stands out as a key player in the Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement Insurance markets, leveraging the resources and expertise of Cigna Corporation to provide high-quality healthcare solutions for seniors. With a strong emphasis on coordinated care, innovation, and community engagement, Cigna-HealthSpring is well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of its members. While facing challenges related to competition and pricing, its commitment to quality service and health outcomes makes it a valuable partner for insurance professionals in the senior market.

Upcoming Contracting System Blackout Period

Contracting systems will be closed after November 28th- December 15th.

As we shared in the October 23 Broker Insights newsletter1, exciting Medicare Advantage (MA), Prescription Drug Plan (PDP), and Supplemental Benefits (CSB) business technology changes are coming your way on December 15! These changes include the implementation of a new contracting system.

To successfully transition to this new system, we must retire our current contracting portals, ExpressWay (CSB) and Producer Express (MA/PDP).

This activity requires a system blackout period, which will begin at 5 p.m. CT / 6 p.m. ET on Friday, November 28, and end on Monday, December 15. Recruiting and contracting capabilities will not be available during this time.

Please note: Agent appointments will continue to be processed during this period.

What to expect during the blackout period:

November 28 is the last day to submit contracts through ExpressWay, Producer Express and the third-party vendor, SuranceBay (CSB). It is also the last day to complete all contracting requirements.

  • Please review submissions closely for accuracy and completion as incomplete or inaccurate contracts may not be processed.
  • At the end of the business day, all open but incomplete contracting requests will be closed, and must be re-submitted when the new contracting system is live.
  • For CSB: Paper contracts may be submitted during the blackout period, but will not be processed until the new contracting system is live.
  • For MA: This is also the last day for all notice of intent to change requests via the Request for Release form. Hierarchy changes may be submitted directly into the new contracting system when it is live.

December 15, the new contracting system is expected to open and you will be able to resume agent and agency contract submissions.
