Cigna-HealthSpring is a subsidiary of Cigna Corporation that specializes in providing healthcare coverage to Medicare beneficiaries. Known for its focus on innovative health solutions, Cigna-HealthSpring plays a significant role in the Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement Insurance markets, positioning itself as a trusted partner for insurance professionals navigating the complexities of senior healthcare coverage.

Cigna-HealthSpring was originally founded as HealthSpring, Inc. in 2000 by Harold and Chris W. McCall, who aimed to create a healthcare organization focused on delivering high-quality care to seniors. The company initially operated as a regional health plan in Texas, gradually expanding its presence across the United States, particularly in the Medicare Advantage space.

In 2012, HealthSpring was acquired by Cigna Corporation, enabling it to leverage Cigna’s extensive resources and capabilities. This acquisition allowed Cigna-HealthSpring to enhance its offerings, integrating Cigna’s broad network of providers and comprehensive health services into its Medicare plans.

Cigna-HealthSpring primarily focuses on Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement Insurance, providing a variety of plans that cater to the diverse needs of seniors. The company emphasizes coordinated care, preventive services, and wellness initiatives to improve health outcomes for its members.

Cigna-HealthSpring also offers specialized programs that address specific health issues, including chronic disease management, behavioral health support, and access to telehealth services. These programs are designed to provide comprehensive coverage and support to members, enhancing their overall healthcare experience.

Cigna-HealthSpring operates under the financial strength of Cigna Corporation, which reported revenues exceeding $180 billion in 2023. This financial backing enables Cigna-HealthSpring to offer competitive pricing and maintain high standards of service for its members.

The company holds an A (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best, reflecting its strong financial stability and ability to meet its obligations to policyholders. This rating instills confidence among insurance professionals and their clients regarding the reliability of Cigna-HealthSpring’s products.

One notable aspect of Cigna-HealthSpring's history is its focus on integrating technology into its healthcare delivery model. The company has been proactive in adopting digital health tools and telemedicine solutions, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which enhanced access to care for its members.

Another interesting anecdote involves Cigna-HealthSpring’s commitment to community engagement. The company has a history of participating in local health fairs, educational seminars, and outreach programs to promote wellness and preventive care among seniors. This community-oriented approach has helped strengthen its brand and build trust with members and insurance agents alike.

Pros:
- Strong Financial Backing: Cigna-HealthSpring benefits from the financial stability and extensive resources of Cigna Corporation, ensuring long-term reliability for policyholders.

- Comprehensive Medicare Offerings: The company provides a variety of Medicare Advantage and Supplement plans tailored to meet diverse senior healthcare needs.

- Innovative Care Coordination: Cigna-HealthSpring emphasizes coordinated care and wellness programs, enhancing health outcomes for its members.

- Community Engagement: The company's involvement in local health initiatives and outreach programs fosters trust and strengthens relationships with members.

Cons:
- Competitive Marketplace: Cigna-HealthSpring faces significant competition in the Medicare Advantage space, requiring continuous innovation to differentiate itself from other insurers.

- Complex Product Structures: The variety of plans and options may lead to confusion among clients, necessitating clear communication and guidance from insurance professionals.

- Higher Premiums: Cigna-HealthSpring's premiums may be higher than those of some competitors, which could limit its attractiveness to cost-sensitive seniors.

Cigna-HealthSpring stands out as a key player in the Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement Insurance markets, leveraging the resources and expertise of Cigna Corporation to provide high-quality healthcare solutions for seniors. With a strong emphasis on coordinated care, innovation, and community engagement, Cigna-HealthSpring is well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of its members. While facing challenges related to competition and pricing, its commitment to quality service and health outcomes makes it a valuable partner for insurance professionals in the senior market.

IMPORTANT UPDATE

Changes to take effect on 11/4/2024

This AEP season has included uncommon amounts of industry change and disruption. As we have communicated throughout the year, Cigna HealthcareSM is focused on offering long-term stability to our Medicare customers.

In support of that goal and based on early results from AEP, we are making limited changes. Effective on Monday, 11/4/2024, we will no longer pay commissions on the PPO plans available in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York listed below for 1/1/2025 effective dates and later.

There are no changes for applications with a signature date before 11/4/2024 and agents will receive commissions for those enrollments. There are also no impacts to renewal commissions for existing customers.

We recognize that mid-AEP changes can be disruptive to your sales approach, and we do not make these decisions lightly. By making small adjustments now, we can better maintain the stability you expect of us and continue to deliver on our commitment to serving our mutual customers. We will continue offering a range of commissionable plan options across our service areas that meet beneficiaries' personal needs, budgets, and lifestyles.

Service area reductions and non-renewed plans

As we near AEP, we want to make you aware that less than 1% of our existing customers will be impacted by MA service area reductions and non-renewals that will be effective January 1, 2025. While there are 36 plans impacted, the majority of them have low membership, and with the exception of four full county exists, we have alternate MA plans available. Review our FAQ below for more information.

Changes to MA ID cards

The changes will apply to 2025 plan year effectives. Please review below.

Our Medicare Advantage ID cards will be changing for 2025 plan year effectives. The changes we are implementing were made in an effort to increase efficiency and encourage treating providers to leverage our digital portals when acquiring a member's current PCP, therefore, eliminating unnecessary delays in treatment due to the referral process.

See what's changing below, so you're ready to answer any customer questions this upcoming AEP.

What's changing?

• ID cards for 2025 plan year effectives will no longer display Primary Care Physician (PCP) names and phone numbers.

• HMO members will not receive new ID cards if they change PCPs throughout the year.

• HMO members will receive a PCP notification letter and FAQ letter upon selection of a PCP.* Log in to Producers' University to view the letters linked above.

• The tooth icon will be removed from the card in favor of the 'Dental Plan' field.

2024

2025

What is staying the same?

• Members in HMO plans are still required to maintain a PCP.

• The PCP network name will not display on the ID card (previously removed in 2024).

• Copays will still display on ID cards.

• Provider claims addresses will still display on back of ID cards.

• Members will still receive a hard copy of their ID card and can request replacement/secondary ID cards if needed.

• PCP Independent Practice Association (IPA) notification letters will be sent to members when they select a PCP belonging to an IPA.

• HMO members with plan-initiated PCP reassignments will be sent the appropriate PCP change letter.

When are these changes occurring?

• New enrollees with a 1/1/2025 effective date will start receiving ID cards without PCP information as soon as 10/15/2024.

• Current enrollees will receive new ID cards during the reissue period taking place between November and December of 2024.
